ROCKWELL KENT (1882-1971) THE TRUTH THAT MAKES MEN FREE / AMERICAN BIBLE SOCIETY. 1939. 32x211/2 inches. Condition A-: vertical and horizontal folds. Paper. One of America's great Art Deco illustrators, Kent was a talented artist, well trained as a wood engraver, lithographer and painter. Moreover he was a traveller, living in Alaska, Greenland, Tierra del Feugo; wild, desolate places from which he drew much of his artistic inspiration. Throughout his prodigious artistic career Rockwell created only a few posters."Man was the hero of most of his pictures. He stood almost alone in American art in his use of symbolism" (Kent ix). Eliot Stanley refers to this as "probably Kent's most widely circulated poster" (JDPA, Spring 1989, p. 17) but we have never seen another copy for sale at auction.
