ROEDER "GELBSTERN" ORANGENSEKT. Circa 1914.
27x18 3/4 inches. Hollerbaum & Schmidt, Berlin.
Condition B+: repaired tears and restoration in top and bottom margins; creases in image.
This is a charming, previously unrecorded poster by Deutsch. Knowing that Deutsch left Berlin and began working under a different name in 1918, and because it is hard to imagine this type of image being produced in war time, this is most likely a pre-war poster. Roeder Gold Star was a sparkling wine with orange flavor (proving that strange drinks are not just a recent fad!). Two young women, clearly representing the young consumer that this product was meant for, are fawning over a giant bottle. Not only do they have stars in their eyes for the product, but they, literally, both have a Roeder gold star on their shoulder. In contrast to the seedy depictions of Berlin night clubbers that Deutsch used to advertise restaurants and cabarets, the spirited, up-beat treatment of this poster can be compared to the posters Deutsch created for Mercedes.
