ROELANT ROGHMAN
Rocky Landscape.

Etching, circa 1645. 134x251 mm; 51/4x97/8 inches, wide margins. A superb, early impression.

Roghman (1627-1692) was a friend of Rembrandt and possibly trained with the latter's mentor, Hercules Seghers. A native of Amsterdam, he was among the most prolific Dutch landscape artists of the 17th-century. The open linear quality of this etching is similar to several of Rembrandt's landscape prints, notably "The Goldweigher's Field," 1651 (Bartsch 234). Bartsch 26; Hollstein 26.
