Additional Details

Spanish patents of nobility were customarily executed in manuscript; this is an uncommon example printed from type. The grantee was apparently the self-taught calligrapher from Pórtugos in the province of Granada who was active at the court of King João V of Portugal in the early 18th century. See Ana Martínez Pereira, "Un Calígrafo Español en la Corte de D. João V," Península: Revista de Estudos Ibéricos, 2003, pages 355-68 (commenting on the limited biographical information about him, not noting this document).
