ROGER BRODERS (1883-1953)

MARSEILLE / LA GRANDE MÉTROPOLE INDUSTRIELLE & COMMERCIALE. 1922.

41 1/2x29 1/2 inches, 105 1/2x75 cm. Cornille & Serre, Paris
Condition B: slight overpainting along abrasions in image, along vertical and horizontal folds; creases and abrasions in margins, image and text; minor loss at lower right edge; repaired tears in margins, some slightly into text and image; repaired pin holes in corners.

Advertising an industrial and commercial exposition, Broders focuses on the port of Marseille rather than the town, perhaps because it was a gateway to the French colonies in Africa. A variant of the poster bears the French text "Exposition Nationale Coloniale." Commerce and industry are visible in the tangible form of dock workers and their machinery in the foreground, alongside all of the different ships in the harbor. Foremost, is an imposing liner sitting in the bay with a vista of the town in the background. Broders p. 80 (var), Perry / Broders p. 18, Marseille cover and p. 54, La Mer p. 188.
