ROGER BRODERS (1883-1953) MARSEILLE / EXPOSITION NATIONALE COLONIALE. 1922.
42x30 1/4 inches, 106 3/4x76 3/4 cm. Cornille & Serre, Paris.
Condition A-: minor creases in margins and image; repaired punch holes in right margin. Matted and framed.
Advertising a National Colonial Exhibition, Broders focuses on the port of Marseille rather than the town, perhaps because it was a gateway to the French colonies in Africa. A variant of the poster bears the French text "The Great Industrial and Commercial Metropolis." Commerce and industry are quite visible here in the tangible form of dock workers and their machinery in the foreground and all of the different ships in the harbor. Foremost is an imposing liner sitting in the bay with a vista of the town in the background. Broders p. 80, Marseille cover and p. 54, La Mer p. 188.
