ROGER BRODERS (1883-1953) MARSEILLE / LA GRANDE METROPOLE INDUSTRIELLE. Circa 1923.
42x30 1/4 inches, 107x77 cm.
Condition B+: minor wrinkles and abrasions in image; scratch in lower right corner. Framed.
In 1922 Broders had used this image to advertise a National Colonial Exhibition in Marseille. The image focuses on the port of Marseille, not the town, perhaps because the port of Marseille was a gateway to the French colonies in Africa. The scene was reused simply as a travel poster promoting Marseille as "The Great Industrial and Commercial Metropolis." And commerce and industry are quite visible here in the tangible form of dockworkers and their machinery in the foreground and all of the different ships in the harbor. Foremost is an imposing liner sitting in the bay with a vista of the town in the background. Broders p. 80 (var), Perry / Broders p. 18, Marseille cover and p. 54 (both var).
