ROGER BRODERS (1883-1953)

VILLEFRANCHE S MER / PORT DE TOURISME. Circa 1929.

40x24¾ inches, 101½x62¾ cm. Lucien Serre, Paris.
Condition A: minor creases and abrasions in margins and image.

"Villefranche is a privileged stopover for cruise ships coming to anchor in the harbor that drop their passengers on land for a sightseeing tour . . . Broders illustrates this new tourism by a large ship pointing its bow towards [shore]. The docks are home to traditional fishing boats, tartans and feluccas, and luxury yachts belonging to a privileged few aristocrats and millionaires" (Azur p. 154). This poster also exists without the PLM logo in the upper right corner, presumably printed for the local tourist office.
