ROGER BRODERS (1883-1953) VICHY / COMITÉ DES FÊTES. Circa 1928.
42x30 1/4 inches, 106 3/4x76 3/4 cm. Lucien Serre & Cie., Paris.
Condition B+: extensive overpainting in margins; repaired tears and creases in image.
One of Broders' most evocative posters, visually encapsulating the decadence and luxury of the Jazz Era. "Beyond the elegance of the characters and the skill of the composition is the harmony of the colors - the deep black that surrounds the image, the blue in the center which emphasizes the bright lanterns and costumes . . . A virtuoso colorist, Broders brings to each of his posters an atmosphere with a strong visual impact" (Affiches Art Deco p. 18). This poster has historically been dated circa 1926, but the stylization of the main characters is more in line with the artist's work circa 1928. Affiches Art Deco p. 19, Broders p. 55, Perry / Broders p. 55, Hillier p. 13. Hillion p. 69, Encyclopedie de l'Affiche p. 211, Affiche Art Deco p. 101.
