The Canadian Pacific's majestic ocean liner, Empress of Britain II was commandeered as a troop convoy during World War II. She sank in 1940 when she was attacked by German aircraft and submarines. The Empress of Britain III made its maiden voyage on April 20th, 1956, between Liverpool and Montreal. Along with its sister ship, Empress of England, they were the first completely air-conditioned liners to cross the Atlantic.

A prolific commercial artist and native Montrealer, Couillard designed posters for Canadian Pacific, Canadian Steamship Lines, Canadian National Railways, the cities of Montreal and Quebec, and the Canadian Department of War. Here, a graphic parallel is created between the ship and a spit of land with a town, suggesting just how large the ship is.
