ROGER DE VALERIO (1896-1951) JEUNES FRANCAIS! COMMENT DEVIENDREZ-VOUS PILOTES. 1927.
311/2x231/2 inches. Devambez, Paris.
Condition A.
An unusual, pre World War II French Airforce recruiting poster featuring three planes, patriotically depicted in the red, white, and blue of the French Tri-color, flying diagonally across the bust profile of a rather Godlike aviator. De Valerio was a prolific illustrator who, for many years, designed several sheet music covers per week for the music publisher Salovert. Many of these designs are among the best produced in the period. But de Valerio never refused a poster commission. R. L. Dupuy, who reviewed posters in the advertising magazine Vendre, named de Valerio the "Polymekana Posterist" from the ancient Greek word meaning "ingenious"--implying that de Valerio could, and would, always adapt his style to the project he was working on. Vendre, May 1928.
