Loosely based on William Shakespeare's The Tempest, Forbidden Planet may best be known for introducing the world to Robby the Robot "cinema's most iconic mechanical manservant." However, the movie, with extensive special effects including animation by Walt Disney animators, was the first mainstream, large-studio film to have an all electronic soundtrack and is considered by many to have been the forerunner to such sci-fi shows as Star Trek. Lauded for its serious approach to a genre that had long been relegated to B-movie status, this movie has remained a cult classic. For this original French release of the movie, Soubie keeps the iconic image of the robot cradling his captive but reimagines the background, actually making the setting seem less like outer space.
