Additional Details

"This is the first Dutch sea chart of the south-east." (Burden.) The Burning Fen was the first maritime atlas devoted to select areas of the American coastline. The title of the atlas refers to the burning of fires along the coast to serve as guides or warnings to passing ships; the Dutch name is also a play on part of the author's name. Roggeveen's charts are rare on the market, especially an example of such high quality as presently offered. Burden 452, first state; Cumming 74.
