ROMAN CIESLEWICZ (1930-1996) BLEKLITNY KRZYZ. 1955.
34x24 inches, 86x61 cm.
Condition B+: minor tears at edges. Paper.
Cieslewicz began his career as a poster designer in 1954 immediately upon graduating from the Krakow School of Fine Art. Under the rigid control of Soviet censorship, Polish artists found that working for Film Polski (the State run movie distribution company), designing movie posters, allowed them unprecedented freedom of expression. Their creativity helped make the Polish school an example of innovation for the whole world. This early movie poster is for a film about an incident at the end of the war involving members of the Blue Cross Rescue Service. The dramatic image gives an overhead view through the trees of men walking through the snow in the shadow of a blue cross.
