ROMAN CIESLEWICZ (1930-1996) KAFKA / PROCES. 1964.
32 1/4x21 1/2 inches. Opus, Paris.
Condition A. Paper.
After his studies at the fine art academy in Krakow, Cieslewicz began his career as a poster designer. In 1963 he moved to Paris, where he became a successful Art Director of various important publications, including Elle, Vogue and Opus International. He was a prolific and versatile artist, and is considered one of the late 20th century masters of collage and photomontage. This poster, for a dramatic production of Franz Kafka's The Trial, is an iconic image in which Cieslewicz uses his unique technique of photographic distortion with saturated black color. It perfectly captures the stark essence of Kafka's writings and is considered one of the most powerful and important French posters of the 1960s. Cieslewicz / Pomidou 19, Weill p. 325, Rademacher 243, Dydo 137.
