ROMAN SCHOOL, LATE 17TH/EARLY 18TH-CENTURY
La Canofiena: Five Girls on a Swing Kept in Motion by Two Boys and Thirteen Fellow Revellers.

Pen and brown ink and gray wash with black chalk on cream laid paper. 380x525 mm; 15x203/4 inches.

A traditional amusement in Rome at the beginning of autumn, in which a large table board from indoors would be adapted for use as a swing and hung in the streets or on trees. Young women sat on the swing and would sing songs to attract the men as they pushed the swing and played instruments around them.
