This image comes from a childhood growing up in rural Mecklenburg County in North Carolina. The passing of trains is a recurrent theme in Bearden's work, an important signifier of change and difference to the artist and his community. Bearden describes this meaning - "I use the train as a symbol of the other civilization--the white civilization, and its encroachment upon the lives of the blacks. The train was always something that could take you away and could also bring you to where you were. And in the little towns, it's the black folks who live near the trains." Gelburd/Rosenberg 64.
