ROMARE BEARDEN (1911 - 1988)
Fjord.

Watercolor and pencil on wove paper, circa 1958-60. 660x510 mm; 26x20 inches. Signed in ink, lower right. 3-inch vertical tear, lower sheet edge.

Provenance: Ex-collection ACA Galleries, New York; private New York collection.

This abstracted, flattened landscape not only suggests the growing influence of Abstract Expressionism, but Bearden's interest in non-Western sources, particularly Chinese landscapes of the Ming dynasty. Bearden was introduced to the subject by a Mr. Wu, a calligrapher and scholar of Chinese paintings. The influence becomes more prevalent in the later works of complete abstraction, in the early 1960s. Sharon Patton, Memory and Metaphor: The Art of Romare Bearden, 1940-1987, p. 36.
