ROMARE BEARDEN (1911 - 1988)
Jazz-Savoy 1930's.

Color lithograph, circa 1986-87. 400x545 mm; 15 3/4x21 1/2 inches, full margins. Proof, with unique inking and aside from the edition of 50. Signed, titled and numbered 1/1 in pencil, lower margin

This superb impression is a unique proof with different coloring from the edition of 50. Le Jazz (Out Chorus II). is described in Mary Lee Corlett's From Process to Print: Graphic Works by Romare Bearden as an image that "finds a reprise in one of Bearden's final works, the collage Opening at the Savoy (1987)." Gelburd/Rosenberg included this lithograph but had no information regarding the edition. This print has an experimental addition of a rainbow roll inking - a technique which Bearden and printer Mohammed Khalil also used for proofs of Tropical Flowers and The Train. Corlett fig. 14 (plate 56), pp. 14, 20-21; Gelburd/Rosenberg 78.
