ROMARE BEARDEN (1911 - 1988)
Storyville Idyll.

Oil monotype with hand coloring in watercolor, 1984. 778x1060 mm; 29 1/2x41 3/4 inches, full margins. Signed in pencil, upper left.

As early as the 1970s, Romare Bearden began a series of scenes inspired by Storyville, the infamous, 19th-century New Orleans bordello district. This work, which depicts a brothel interior with a prostitute and a piano player, is from a series of monotypes in which Bearden perfected a hybrid process of printing in oil and later heightening the prints by hand with watercolor.
