This iconic and colorful collage displays Romare Bearden's increased use of both handcolored and printed papers in the early 1970s. A very similar composition was used for the same-titled color screenprint, which was printed in an unknown edition. A scarce print, Bearden circulated Tidings as a gift in the early 1970s. The title and subject of Tidings go back to the artist's Prevalence of Ritual series, his first series of collage and photomontage projections of collages in 1964, and his interest in Renaissance depictions of the Visitation.
