ROMARE BEARDEN (1911 - 1988)
Untitled (Scales of Justice).

Collage of mixed colored papers, circa 1976. 520x770 mm; 20x15 inches. Signed in ink, lower left.

Provenance: the artist; private New York collection.

A strong example of the artist's mid-career work in collage in which themes of African-American history are represented and the color forms are simplified. Bearden did a series of works related to the Amistad rebellion before his famous Odysseus series. This collage's figure is very similar to one in the collage of fabric, Capitivity and Resistance, commissioned to open the African-American Museum, Philadelphia, in 1976. See Fine pp. 83-85, pl. 78.
