ROMARE BEARDEN
Untitled (Melon Season).

Collage of various papers with ink on gessoed cardstock, circa 1967. 292x216 mm; 111/2x81/2 inches. Signed in ink, lower left. Ex-collection the artist and Abe Taube, Brighton, MA.

This work was acquired directly from the artist by the owner who worked with Bearden at the New York City Department of Welfare during the 1960s.

This collage has the same composition as the larger Melon Season, 1967, Neuberger Museum, SUNY at Purchase, NY. See Memory and Metaphor, The Art of Romare Bearden 1940--1987, Oxford University Press, New York, 1991, p.51, fig. 28.

Another Bearden work from this estate, the watercolor Summer Landscape, was sold at Swann on March 2, 2004, and was illustrated on the front cover.
