Additional Details

". . . I am just beginning to get the returns from all over the State and it looks now as if I had not only carried a great majority of the counties, but that I had also obtained a majority in the State exclusive of Greater New York. . . . I have heard from several of the Murphy sources that they have been greatly surprised at the strong showing we made up-State and they have already approached us with all sorts of propositions.
"Of course, I am absolutely abiding by the result and shall do all that I can to help elect Gerard. It is of the utmost importance that he should go to the Senate rather than Jimmie Wadsworth . . . . [who] represents . . . all that is most reactionary in the most reactionary wing of the reactionary Republican Party! His record at Albany in the . . . days of the Black Horse Cavalry should be enough to show that his election . . . would be a great misfortune . . . ."
". . . The entering wedge has been driven and we have opened out the way for the future."
