In 1932, the year he was elected president, Roosevelt purchased Meyers's original sketchbook for his naval collection. Recognizing the historical importance of the sketches, he arranged to have them published, resulting in the present book. Robert Morris Morgenthau (b. 1919) served as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, 1962-70, and is the son of FDR's Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau, Jr.
