Additional Details

Nicholas Roosevelt (1892-1982) was the son of Theodore Roosevelt's first cousin and friend James West Roosevelt. In 1912, as a young man, Nicholas accompanied his older cousin to the 1912 Republican Convention, and witnessed his controversial loss to William Howard Taft. This led to a split in the party, with Roosevelt running under the Progressive Party banner in that year's general election, which was won by Woodrow Wilson. This lively narrative is accompanied by a related Typed Letter Signed from Nicholas Roosevelt to Roosevelt biographer William Roscoe Thayer, New York, 21 December [circa 1920?].
