"IF WE ARE GOING TO WIN AT CHICAGO IT WILL BE BY WORK AND ORGANIZATION" ROOSEVELT, THEODORE. Autograph Letter Signed, as Assemblyman, to Edwin Packard, discussing preparations for a reception [for the New York delegation to the Republican National Convention]. 2 pages, 8vo, written on the first and third pages, mourning stationery; terminal leaf inlaid, horizontal fold. (TFC) Albany, 8 May [1884]

Additional Details

"Mr. Dooty has written to me that you have told him that the proposed 'reception' entirely meets your views . . . . I hope that this 'reception' will be very informal in character; I do not think there ought to be twenty men there outside of the delegates, and above all no reporters; if we are going to win at Chicago it will be by work and organization among the delegates themselves."
Roosevelt served as Chairman of the New York delegation to the Republican National Convention while suffering the loss of his mother and wife, both of whom died a few months prior to the date of writing.
