The "Presidential Edition." Roosevelt inscribed the book to the five-year-old son of publisher Albert Shaw (1857-1947): "To Master Roger Shaw, from a fellow lover of nature. Theodore Roosevelt, June 15th 1908." Tipped to the front pastedown is the 1908 transmittal letter from Roosevelt's secretary. Tipped to the rear free endpaper is a signed note from Eleanor Roosevelt to Shaw, thanking him for condolences on the death of her nephew Daniel Stewart Roosevelt (1917–1939).
