Additional Details

The limited Daniel Boone edition, issued to capitalize on Roosevelt's campaign for the vice-presidency. The manuscript leaf describes the desperate retreat in the 1791 Battle of Wabash, perhaps the worst defeat of an American army unit until Little Bighorn. It begins "him a cramp in both thighs, so that he could barely walk," and includes several revisions in Roosevelt's hand (see page IV:46 in this edition). The manuscript was likely written circa 1889, when Roosevelt was just starting to make his national reputation on the United States Civil Service Commission. Howes R433 ("aa").
