ROOSEVELT, THEODORE. Two Endorsements Signed, "T. Roosevelt," as President, each on a partly-printed certificate concerning an act or resolution of the National Council of the Cherokee Nation. The first, certifying an unknown act passed by the Council at its regular session in 1902. Countersigned by Principal Chief T.M. Buffington. 1 page, 4to; some chipping at right edge, even toning overall, horizontal folds. The second, certifying a resolution passed by the Council at its special session in 1905, including "An Act providing for a Commission to represent the Cherokee Nation in the preparation of legislation for the final settlement of its affairs," passed by the U.S. Senate on September 26, 1905. Countersigned by Principal Chief William C. Rogers. With a printed copy of the act, attached to document with ribbon at upper edge. 1 page, folio; silked on verso, loss to lower corners repaired with paper, some offsetting from ribbon crossing page from upper right to seal at lower left, even toning overall, fonts, foil seal intact. The printed act: "Whereas, under existing laws the Tribal Government of the Cherokee Nation ceases on the fourth day of March 1906; and . . . The Principal Chief . . . is hereby authorized and directed to appoint a Commission consisting of three persons, by and with the consent of the Senate, who shall be authorized to represent the Cherokee Nation in the preparation of legislation for the final settlement of its affairs . . . ."
William Charles Rogers (1847-1917) served as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation between 1903 and 1917.
