ROSALIE GWATHMEY (1908-2001)
Tobacco Barns. Silver print, the image measuring 6 5/8x9 3/4 inches (16.8x24.8 cm.), the sheet slightly larger, with Gwathmey's signature and title in pencil on verso. Circa 1940

Rosalie Gwathmey joined the Photo League in 1942, but after FBI investigations in the early 1950s, she destroyed her negatives and stopped photographing. Her photography was known for capturing the lives of residents of Southern African American communities, and her social documentary approach reflect the political climate and racial issues in the United States during the 1940s. Many of her prints have been donated to the New York Public Library.
