ROY DECARAVA (1919 - 2009)
Self Portrait.

Color screenprint printed on buff laid paper, 1947. 292x240 mm; 11 1/2x9 1/2 inches, full margins. Signed and dated in ink, lower left. Titled in pencil, lower left margin. A very good impression of this very scarce print, with vibrant, fresh colors.

DeCarava used an experimental device of overlapping silhouettes in this unusual self-portrait. DeCarava had first trained in screenprinting while working in the poster division of the WPA. After serving in the army during World War II, he abandoned painting for printmaking, which he pursued while working as a commercial illustrator. In 1944, he joined the National Serigraph Society and by 1947 had a one-person exhibition at the Serigraph Galleries. By the early 1950s, DeCarava had largely left printmaking for a career as a photographer. Galassi pp.13-16.
