Written by Harry Leon Wilson in 1919, Merton of the Movies was adapted into play form three years later. For this performance in 1968, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Lichtenstein evokes the Art Deco sensibilities of the Golden Age of Hollywood. The poster was published by H. K. L. Ltd. They were recreating the success of a project launched in 1962, through which fine art posters were commissioned and published in order to raise money for, and awareness of, Lincoln Center in New York City.
