ROY LICHTENSTEIN (AFTER)
Little Big Painting (1965) Reproduction.

Chromograph mounted on stretched canvas, 1968. 1067x1245 mm; 42x49 inches. Printed by Tiffany Color, Inc., New York. Published by the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

The edition size is unknown, but there are likely very few extant copies. We have not found another one at auction in the past 30 years and Corlett did not locate one either for the revised 1999 edition of the Lichtenstein catalogue raisonné.

According to Corlett, in the late 1960s, the Whitney Museum authorized the chromographic reproduction of twenty works in its collection by the artists including Lichtenstein, Adolph Gottlieb, Edward Hopper, Franz Kline, John Marin, Robert Rauschenberg, Joseph Stella and others. The chromograph was described by the printer, Tiffany Color, Inc., as an electronic and photographic technique that duplicates the tone and texture depths of painting, a process which creates a facsimile of an original work. These reproductions were sold through retail outlets, including bookstores, specialty shops, and galleries, and were also made available to institutions such as schools and hospitals. Corlett App. 13.
