The Leviathan was originally a German ship named the Vaterland that was seized by the United States during World War I and renamed. In 1923, the United States Shipping Board transferred the ship over to the United States Lines. Though not in fact "The largest ship in the world," (she was second to White Star's Majestic), the ship was a headline-maker and considered to be one of the best-known liners in the western world.
