Formed in 1894, the Alaska Steamship Company shipped passengers and fishing products, in addition to mining equipment, dog sleds and cattle to accommodate the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897. The company merged with the Northwestern Steamship company in 1909, but the name and company remained until World War II, when the government took over the liners. Passenger service was discontinued in 1954. The "sheltered seas" alluded to in the title refer to Alaska's "Inside Passage," whose fjords were carved by glaciers during the ice age. The network of waterways runs through Alaska's panhandle from Ketchikan in the south up to Skagway in the north, and includes Sitka, Glacier Bay, Juneau, the state capitol, and more. Not only safe and smooth sailing, the Inside Passage offers incredible natural sights and remains one of the most popular cruise routes to America's 49th state.
