RUFINO TAMAYO
Cabeza.

Lithograph, 1964. 260x282 mm; 10 1/4x11 1/4 inches (sheet), full margins. Signed and numbered 19/20 in pencil, lower left. Printed and published by Tamarind, Los Angeles, with the blind stamps lower right. A very good impression of this extremely scarce, early lithograph.

Tamayo (1899-1991) remained close to his Oaxacan heritage throughout his career. While influenced by Fauvism, Cubism and Surrealism, having close ties to fellow Mexican muralists such as Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros, and drawing significantly from native Mexican arts and spirituality, he developed a distinctly individual, modern style. During the mid-20th century, and especially during the ascent of his productive printmaking career, Tamayo's style has an affinity with Surrealism, looking back to earlier works by artists including Joan Miró and Max Ernst. Pereda 93.
