RUFINO TAMAYO
Cabeza.

Color lithograph, 1959. 660x510 mm; 26x20 1/8 inches, full margins. Signed and numbered 42/100 in pencil, lower margin. A very good impression of this scarce, early lithograph.

Tamayo (1899-1991) remained close to his Oaxacan, Mexico heritage throughout his career. While influenced by Fauvism, Cubism and Surrealism, having close ties to fellow Mexican muralists such as Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros, and drawing significantly from native Mexican arts and spirituality, he developed a distinctly individual, modern style. During the mid-20th century, and especially during the ascent of his productive printmaking career, Tamayo's style has an affinity with Surrealism, looking back to earlier works by artists including Joan Miró and Max Ernst. Pereda 53.
