Mixed set of the English translation by William Ward of the first 3 (of 4) volumes of Ruscelli's popular collection of formulas, comprising the fourth edition of the first volume and the second edition (by different printers) of the second and third. The translation of the fourth volume by Richard Androse first appeared in 1569 (see below). "The 'Secrets of Alexis' published a wide range of empirically discovered recipes, including formulae for medicinal compounds, cosmetics, pigments, dyes, metallurgy, and jewelry"--Norman 1860 (1555 original edition in Italian of the first volume).
