Rackley was an artist-activist who led the Unemployment Section of the Artists' Union. She also worked for the WPA. During the Spanish Civil War she moved to Spain to serve as a secretary and interpreter for the American Medical Bureau to Aid Spanish Democracy, and in World War II she helped to unionize California's shipyards.
