Rae, John (1813-1893)
Narrative of an Expedition to the Shores of the Arctic Sea in 1846 and 1847.

London: T. & W. Boone, 1850.

First edition, octavo, viii, 248; illustrated with two hand-colored folding maps; partially unopened, bound in original ribbed green cloth, blocked in blind on front and back boards, decorative blind stamping and gilt titling to spine, yellow endpapers, in very good condition, unsophisticated; ex libris Hudson's Bay Company, with stamps to verso and margins of first map and some text leaves; housed in a custom protective cloth box, 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 in.

"Like all other expeditions by land to the Arctic Ocean, the success of this was attributable largely to the aid derived from the Red Indians and the Esquimaux. In consequence, the volume is occupied to a great extent with a detail of incidents associated with Indian life and habits. The methods by which the hardy aborigines of the Arctic zone prolong their lives, which are one long struggle with starvation and famine, their craft and devices in hunting and fishing, and many other particulars of their condition, are interwoven with the journal." (Thomas W. Field, An Essay Towards an Indian Bibliography, New York: Scribner, Armstrong, & Co., 1873, see number 1253).

Arctic Bibliography 14097; Sabin 67428; Streeter 3715; Wagner-Camp 187; Field 1253.
