Rand, Ayn (1905-1982)
The Fountainhead, first edition.

New York: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1943.

Stated first edition, octavo; bound in first issue red cloth boards brightly lettered in gilt, red top stain; in the first issue dust jacket with other titles printed on rear panel, price unclipped (small area of scuffing to spine, ends just pushed; minor edgewear and a few short tears to jacket, spine panel sunned as expected, minor scuffing); 8 1/2 x 5 5/8 in.

Despite being initially rejected by twelve different publishers, The Fountainhead quickly became one of Rand's most important works upon its release in 1943. In this, her second book, she introduces her famous protagonist, Howard Roark. Fiercely independent and modernist, Roark was based on the architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Roark lays out the blueprint for Rand's prototypical hero-- an idealized archetype created to promote her objectivist philosophy which helped make her one of the best-selling female authors of all time.
