Reed's illustration was created to promote the English-language adaptation by Hannah Lynch (1859-1904) of Spanish playwright José Echegaray y Eizaguirre's (1832-1916) O Locura o Santidad. Reed was born in Massachusetts and studied at the Cowles Art School in the 1890s. Her career was short but productive. She illustrated many books and posters to great critical acclaim and died in obscurity in London before turning forty. This poster endures as one of her most memorable images.
