Rigaltius, Nicolas, ed. (1577-1654)
Artemidor Daldiani & Achmetis Sereimi F. Oneirocritica. Astrampsychi & Nicephori versus etiam Oneirocritici.

Paris: Orry, 1603.

First edition of this collection of the works on dream interpretation, large quarto, title page printed in red and black, original text in Greek and Latin in parallel columns, each followed by Rigaltius's notes; bound in full contemporary brown morocco, spine and boards with gilt-tooled decoration, aeg., a bit rubbed, unsophisticated; ex libris Solomon R. Guggenheim (1861-1949), with his bookplate inside the front board, 8 1/2 x 6 in.

This collection of works on oneiromancy, the interpretation of dreams as a means to predict the future, includes the work of several ancient authors, including the Greek Artemidorus (2nd Century CE), another work attributed to Muhammad ibn Sirin, an 8th century Muslim scholar, and the shorter Oracles of Astrampsychus and Nikephoros. Many cultures have promulgated the idea that dream states reveal literal truths, and that the dreamer is actually transported to different times and places in dreams. As such, powerful dreams that comment on momentous events have been honored as potently reliable indications of things that will happen in the future. As a stepping stone in our understanding of human psychology. This particular work provides several levels: Rigaltius, the early modern scholar, and his commentary on the ancient texts.
