Ringgold, Faith (1930-2024)
Woman Freedom Now.

New York, June 1971.

Color offset lithograph in red, green and black on card; 722 x 492 mm; 28½ x 19½ inc.

In 1971, Ringgold created this poster for distribution at social gatherings and at Black Power movement protests. The original collage maquette is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Its design is reminiscent of Ringgold's 1969 Black Light Series #11 US America Black, with colors representative of the Black Power movement. Woman Freedom Now was one of a series that also included a poster supporting the prison release of Angela Davis. The tessellated design is based on motifs used by the Kuba tribe in Central Africa.
