Only three Maya codices survived the Spanish invasion. This elaborate facsimile was created for the 500th anniversary of 1492. The original Codex was likely produced in Yucatan, as it is written in that language, and is an almanac and horoscopic reference work used by priests in religious ceremonies and rituals. It was broken into two parts which were subsequently separated from each other sometime in the 19th century and later reunited after scholarly examination revealed that the two parts were fragments of the same book.
