Folio, title page printed in black and red, large woodcut on title page; title and imprint trimmed away from original sheet; bottom half of sheet replaced with new paper, text of title and imprint provided in pen facsimile; bound in full gilt-tooled red morocco with ornately tooled broad inner dentelles and joints; ex libris Baron de Landau with bookplate; some browning to scattered leaves; this copy washed and pressed; 11 3/4 x 7 1/2 in.

Montalvo's contribution to the Amadis story cycle consists of this, the fourth book, also known as Las Sergas de Esplandián. In it, he coins the word California. His compelling tale of adventure may have inspired Hernán Cortés and others of his ilk to seek this idyllic island in the West Indies.
