Rojas, Fernando de (circa 1465/1473)
Celestina. Tragicomedia de Calisto et Melibea Novamente Tradotta de Lingua Castigliana in Italiano Idioma.

Venice: Gregorio de Gregorii, 1525.

First edition in Italian, translated from the original by Alfonso de Ordonez; bound in full red morocco gilt, aeg., the Heredia copy, with bookplate; lacking final blank, 5 7/8 x 3 3/4 in.

La Celestina is valued as one of the best examples of Spanish-language literature. A novel consisting of a series of dialogues that can also be read as a play, it has been staged as such. The structure itself indicates movement and development in Spanish letters in the early Renaissance. Written during the reign of Ferdinand & Isabella, a time of epic change in Spanish society, some aspects of its first publication and authoriship are still under scholarly scrutiny.

Adams C-1234; Palau 51191; Heredia 2303; Penney page 120.
