Ruppersberg, Allen (b. 1944)
Al's Grand Hotel.

Los Angeles, CA: Privately printed, ca. 1971.

First edition, octavo; illustrated with black-and-white photos depicting items in the hotel offered for sale alongside typed descriptions and prices; bound in original stapled wrappers printed in black-and-white (lightly toned; small stain to front panel); 9 x 6 in.

Ruppersberg's art installation of the same name involved his purchase of a two-story craftsman home off Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, which he then converted into a working hotel. Far from a traditional hotel experience, Al's Grand Hotel showcased seven themed rooms which hosted not only overnight guests, but also gatherings, parties, and performances. This catalogue, produced in tandem with the art installation, contains photos of the rooms and their contents which Ruppersberg offered for sale after the hotel's dissolution, ending a six-week run of absurd fun. In 2014, lovers of Ruppersberg's concept staged a 4-day reprise of the Grand Hotel.
