A painter and graphic designer, Bortnyik began studying art in Budapest and become one of the earliest followers of Lajos Kassak. He moved to Weimar in the early 1920s where he was influenced by the Bauhaus and specifically the work of Oskar Schlemmer and Theo van Doesburg. Bortnyik returned to Hungary where he worked as a graphic designer and teacher at a school of advertising that he founded and directed. Although his style varied over his career, he is most highly regarded for his avant-garde design work within the poster world. He designed a number of images for Modiano, the famed rolling paper company. Berman / Juan March p. 231, Crouse p. 217, Affiche Art Deco p. 279.
